Featured Furniture:

John Townsend Tea Table
mahogany, 27"h, 33"w, 21"d SOLD

The majority of Newport's rectangular tea tables were made with graceful slipper feet, but a rare group were made with ball and claw feet.  This example is after an early John Townsend original with his early style of foot carving.  The open-talon feet anchor the design and give it a subtle strength.  This features a one-board top and ogee top molding. A similar table is shown in American Furniture in Pendleton House.

Goddard Side Chairs
mahogany, 38 1/2"h SOLD

From an exceptionally rare set of Goddard originals, these chairs represent the pinnacle of  Newport chair design.  These feature balloon seats, shaped stretchers, molded cabriole stiles, pierced crest shells, and signature Goddard ball and claw feet. For more information on the originals, see Sotheby's catalog for sale 8055 Jan. 2005.

John Townsend Block-Front Chest
mahogany, 34 1/2"h, 37"w, 20"d SOLD

The familiar Newport block-front design executed with architectural proportion and precise detail as only John Townsend did. Townsend's four-drawer design gives the chest a wider and more sophisticated appearance than the three-drawer versions of other Newport cabinetmakers.  This is after one of his later examples with the basket palmette at the center of each shell and delicate Federal-era brasses.  See Sack's p. 111 or Moses p. 76.

Newport Bonnet-Top Highboy
figured mahogany, 87"h, 41"w, 21 1/2"d

The essence of Newport furniture design: An early Townsend family design that relies on the refinement of line and proportion rather than ornament for its impressive presence.  It exemplifies the design ideals of the day: grace, lightness, and an upward visual sweep.  The base features a Townsend fleur-de-lis shell and stands atop Townsend cabriole legs with slipper feet.  The upper case is crowned with an open bonnet with book-matched pediment panels and a central flame-and-urn finial on a fluted plinth.  The entire piece is handcrafted in dense figured mahogany that seems to glow from within.

See Available Pieces page for this and other pieces that are currently available in our Newport showroom.
